“With the fast pace of daily life, we often don’t realise how much we accomplish every day,” says Alok. This sentiment rings particularly true for the Brazilian superstar, whose past 12 months have been some of his busiest yet — and considering the few years the DJ and producer has had, that’s really saying something. This year alone, he’s released over 15 singles, including ‘Deep In Your Love’ with Bebe Rexha, ‘Tsunami’ with Ely Oaks and ‘Allein Allein’ with INNERVERSE and FREY, which was later remixed by Argy. Most recently, he released ‘The Heat’ with Jazzy.
In April, a landmark moment came in the form of ‘The Future Is Ancestral’, an album made in collaboration with 50 Indigenous musicians from throughout Brazil, with 100% of royalties going directly to the communities involved. At the time of its release, Alok described the project as “a movement to reforest the imagination of our society and its perception of Indigenous peoples and the importance of their presence in multiple territories.”
Together with a number of these musicians, Alok brought the ‘The Future Is Ancestral’ to the Global Citizen Festival in New York in September. One track from that album, ‘Pedju Kunumigwe’ with Guarani Nhandewa, was nominated for a Latin Grammy, as was his track ‘Drum Machine’ with DJ Pickle.
