Ask the Singaporean spinner Alfy Ngor, better known as WUKONG, about his personal highlights of the last year, and he’ll preface the list with a bit of gratitude: “Been the craziest year for me,” he says, “and I am thankful.” Then he’ll mention an impressive array of high-profile collaborations. There was the soaring ‘I Believe’, for instance, with the veteran Bassjackers duo, and the super-bouncy ‘Let Me Go’ with UK ravey trance maven Ben Nicky, and the massively emotive ‘Heart For Rent’ with the LA-based Nurko. Then, of course, there’s his touring, which has taken him to “the biggest festivals and venues that I dreamt of,” he says. But what’s been the absolute apex of his year? “Enjoying all the free food that comes along with the touring,” he says.
We suspect Ngor’s likely going to be well-fed for a while, with his success coming as a result of his sound and presentation, which he terms “oriental rave.” “I draw inspiration from everything — Chinese instruments, cinema, our language and the rich cultural tapestry around us,” he said in a recent interview, citing his culture and mythology as inspirations. Whatever WUKONG chooses to call his style, there’s no denying that it’s working a treat.
