Deki Alem

Raving punk prophecy

Deki Alem’s ‘Forget In Mass’ is a welcome return to the mind-melting fun of rave’s golden era. Their debut album folds energetic breaks, punk ferocity, and the brooding atmosphere of trip hop into the mix — providing an essential snapshot of the raw and gritty sounds emerging from Stockholm’s underground. Fronted by Swedish-Eritrean twins Sammy and Johnny Bennett, the Gothenburg band has fashioned nine razor-sharp tracks — the propulsive breaks of ‘Fun’ carries the brother’s anti-systemic lyrics and the dub-tinged ‘Tip Of Your Tongue’ explores questions of collective identities and individualism. ‘House Fire’, meanwhile, strikes the perfect balance between playfulness and defiance, evoking a prophetic flair comparable to electronic figureheads like The Prodigy or Faithless. ‘Forget In Mass’ is a commanding debut, a smorgasbord of thrills which will no doubt build on the band’s already strong cult following.

Kloke

Lucid jungle vision

British producer Kloke appeared in 2008 with a series of forward-thinking post-dubstep releases, before trying his hand at ambient. Now based in Melbourne, he’s switched his focus to jungle, releasing on labels like Future Retro and Diamond Life, as well as collabing with Tim Reaper for a LP on Hyperdub. ‘Lucidity’ arrives via Samurai’s jungle imprint Mindgames and brims with Kloke’s immaculately edited, adventurous beats. On the title cut, dramatic chords precede a drop into layered drum chops, while on ‘The Man Who Began To Suspect He Was Made Of Glass’, mechanoid bass slithers around the metallic breaks like a chrome snake. ‘Odyssey’ is like one of his ambient tracks printed onto a ferocious Amen avalanche. Kloke cleverly balances jungle precepts with fresh ideas on a gem of an LP.
